PVC film degradation is a chemical change that greatly reduces the average molecular weight of the polyvinyl chloride polymer during its service life or after careless processing. Since the mechanical integrity of plastics depends on their high average molecular weight, wear and tear inevitably weaken the material. The aging and degradation of plastics leads to embrittlement and microcracks on the surface, resulting in particles that continue to exist in the environment. Also called microplastics, these particles act like sponges, absorbing the surrounding persistent organic pollutants. Therefore, due to high levels of persistent organic pollutants, microorganisms are usually absorbed by organisms in the biosphere.
The fungus effectively reduces plasticized PVC. In this way, the PVC film is degraded.
