What is a tarpaulin? Tarpaulin is a thicker cotton or linen fabric. Named for its initial use for sails. Considering the various uses of the tarpaulin, the general requirements that should be met are: good waterproof performance and air permeability, anti-condensation on the inside; high strength, wear resistance, long service life; light weight, easy to fold, easy to carry and operate; Acid and alkali resistance, mildew resistance, corrosion resistance; good weather resistance, flame retardant, fire prevention; no wicking effect, no moisture conduction phenomenon. Tarpaulins are generally required to have 'three defenses' functions: waterproof, fireproof (flame retardant), and mildew proof. When designing products or using tent fabrics, the main performance indicators of tent fabrics are: elongation skin and dimensional stability; tensile strength; air permeability; water resistance; tear strength. As an eaves tent or a large tent, it is often used under tension, and the elongation of the fabric should not be too large, and its dimensional stability is determined by the creep characteristics of the material. The tarpaulin needs to withstand various tensions and maintain its original shape after receiving external force, which requires the tarpaulin to have a high tensile strength, and there should not be too much difference in the tensile strength of the warp and weft. The tarpaulin needs to consider the breathability, especially the military tent fabric. The influencing factors of air permeability are base fabric structure, density, material, type of waterproof finishing agent, resin adhesion amount, etc. With the increase of resin adhesion, the air permeability of the tarpaulin decreased. Water resistance is an important feature of tarpaulins. Through impregnation and finishing, resin is filled in the gaps of the fabric to form a coating film. If the resin adhesion amount per unit area exceeds a certain level, water resistance will not be a problem. If the coating film is thin, it is easy to crack when subjected to bending, rubbing or surface abrasion. The damage of the tarpaulin is mainly caused by tearing, so the tearing strength is the main indicator of the tarpaulin. The tear strength is related to whether the tarpaulin will rupture due to the action of flying foreign objects or expand to the surrounding after forming holes for some reasons, forming large structural tears.
